I was a little disappointed to see there were no case fans. When using the computer to process some video projects, the CPU would have to down clock to keep the temps around 82C. Removing the side panel during this intensive workload solved the issue. I was further disappointed to see that the extra fan header does not have enough power for a standard 12 volt fan. You will need a 92mm 5v fan. The cooling is adequate for day to day use: documents, web browsing, videos, etc. Those tasks won't warm up the machine at all. However, when I build machine, I make sure the PC can operate at 100% without compromising temperature. Thermal throttling is loss performance, which increases processing time on intensive editing tasks. Even if Acer added a ten dollar fan, this would still be a great deal.
Some also wonder if this PC could be the base for a gaming computer. Yes, it certainly can. The CPU and memory would be great in a gaming PC. But, you will need a dedicated graphics card like a GTX 1650 Super or a GTX 1660. You will also need a bigger power supply and some better cooling. When you add the cost of a graphics card, power supply, and cooling, you're probably at the cost of a pre-built gaming tower. You should probably go that route instead.
For a home office PC, I highly recommend this setup. It can also handle some pretty intensive video processing given you address the cooling to make sure it stays running at its max clock speed.
Like any pre-built Windows PC, there is some bloatware. Just remove all programs by Acer, McAfee, and Norton. This takes about 10 minutes.
If you found my review helpful, please press that button and thank you for reading all the way to the end.
Problem is when you take off the case you will see there is no hard drive cage with extra slots for another drive, and the power cable going from the power unit to the hard drive doesn't have a spare SATA power cable just hanging out. The SATA cable does have 3-4 female slots on it, so you can plug in the correct cable to power up your SSD. Here is the one I found on Amazon, which is half the price for the same thing from my local Micro Center: ASIN B07MDXBVMC (just copy and search the "B07MDXBVMC " on Amazon and it will come up).
I can't recall if the Samsung came with its own data cable, but here is one that has gotten good reviews on Amazon, the ASIN number is: B07JW9RMTG
You will see I think 2-3 spare data slots on the motherboard to plug the data cable into. I just plugged everything in and then attached the Samsung SSD to the bottom of the inside of the PC case with a 3M command strip, so I could easily peel it off if I ever needed to remove the SSD. This way it would be out of the way and not banging into any other components.
Obviously turn off your PC before you install the new SSD. Once you have everything plugged in then put the case cover back on and boot up. Open windows file explorer and you should see the new drive as a separate label. You can google "how to change location of pictures folder on windows 10" to move that folder (and documents/music/video if you wish) to the new SSD so your main SSD that came with the computer is reserved for the operating system and installed programs. Hopefully this will last me for 5+ years.
Did have to remove some of the plastic cowling of the card to remove pressure from the ribbon cable. So have an Asus PCE-AC88 External WiFi adapter plus a very good graphics card installed in this Aspire TC-885-UA92.
Installed an external Samsung 2TB EVO drive that resides under the metal drive panel. Want another one as the Samsung can be sped up with their Magician software.
Swapped out the memory for 32GB of a paired Crucial memory, and usually have 24 GB of free RAM. (Was unsure if this Acer Aspire TC-885-UA92's maximum memory was 32GB or 64GB. Bought the 32GB while it was on sale.)
Would like to get another Samsung SSD drive in the other slot, and finally upgrade the Western Digital M.2 NVMe main SSD from its 512MB to 2TB at some point.
Have a pair of 5.25 inch external fans that are powered by an external USB 3.0 hub to blow inside the case when I am gaming, whether it is needed or not.
For the GTX 1050ti I use MSI Afterburner to ramp up the fan when I am gaming or editing videos.
For people that say this is not a gaming machine due to its lack of airflow, let me say it holds its own quite well. Then too it depends what type of gaming you are doing. For what I do this machine is plenty good, and no issues with the graphics card or any power issues.
Externally I use a 65 watt USB 3.0 that has 10 ports, and that covers everything I use and then some.
The sound card on this Acer is nothing less than absolutely overwhelming. Bought a cheap pair of $20 speakers and feels like I have a $400 sound system here. A subwoofer would really put some oomph in the floors with the sound card!!
While I did add an external WiFi adapter, as the only wireless access point here is 140 feet away, the internal Realtech WiFi does reach that wireless access point with 2 bars, I wanted more power. Then a Netgear AX-1800 came by for review and I swapped over to using the Acer's built-in WiFi to use the AX-1800 external mesh extender and this system works out quite well.
On those days when the neighbors inundate the access point with too many streaming devices I turn the Asus WiFi adapter on and connect it to an iPhone. (MiMo) and I can game all night long if needed.
There are a lot of possibilities this Aspire TC-885-UA92 compact tower can do. I do not overwhelm the PSU (power supply unit) and keep external devices connected to an external powered hub. Am VERY PLEASED to had gotten on the sale. Thank you Acer and Amazon for having competitive prices.
While I am a Vine Voice person, I bought this machine with my own resources. Have been using it every day since its arrival. Everything works.
For its size, the only con I can say is Acer should of have an extended motherboard, added daughter-board, or extended the PCIe slot out more so their consumers could of easily added a PCIe card in there for whatever the reason. Most video cards are double spaced. And Acer knew this because the last bottom slot was there. When I added the ribbon extender and the card was just past the edge of the motherboard the external case slot was there waiting in near perfect alignment. Was left up to my imagination, and searching to find there were external PCIe Extensions that could be used, and found them on Amazon as well. :) Amazon has everything!
