The CM-32 was fairly easy to setup, using the quick start setup leaflet provided. It involved connecting the Xfinity cable, and connecting to the router via a default WiFi SSID. I used a Samsung tablet to do this. I was prompted to install a Xfinity app on my Android smartphone, and from then on the setup was done via the phone app. Pretty quick and painless, about 15 minutes from start to finish, no need to call any technicians. Very nice.
I have since upgraded my Xfinity plan to 400 Mb/s down - 10 Mb/s up. Those are the MINIMUM speeds I get with the new combo! I'm typically getting around 480/12 via wired ethernet. Pretty impressive. So far working without a hitch, and one less piece of equipment to manage.
WiFi speeds are also pretty impressive, particularly in the 5 GHz band. We have a 3200 sq ft home, and coverage from the router is very impressive throughout the house. In my neighborhood, there's zero interference from neighbors on the 5 GHz band, which is why I'm using it. On my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 tablet, I'm getting about 160 Mb/s down, at the furthest reach from the router. More than fast enough, and probably taxing the puny processor in the tablet! My ThinkPad laptop gets around 320 Mb/s down at the same location.
The router's browser-based management interface is typically Asus, well thought-out and similar enough to my old router's that it was very easy to navigate. One caveat though: Asus appears to have removed any ability for the end user to update the router's firmware. Researching the internet suggest that they've taken the view that they will "push" firmware updates to the router if an when they become available. We'll wait and see if that ever happens. The router shows it's currently running firmware version 1.0.1.5.
Overall, a very nice combo, working extremely well for now. Recommended.
*** Edited 3/16/2021 ***
I noticed today that the unit is now running firmware version 1.0.1.7. So, clearly Asus pushed an update to it. However, no indication of when the update took place, nor what the update has in it. All I can say is that it's performing as well as it did before - AFAIK. Asus really should be more transparent about their update policy.
Pros:
- Modem + Router combo eliminates how many devices need to be plugged in to the power strip.
- Plenty of options available for customization, security, USB device setup, etc.
- Router handoff appears to work well enough for a mesh network (using secondary router to extend the network).
- Clean looking GUI.
- Very good range on the 2.4GHZ wifi. Decent range on the 5GHz wifi.
Cons:
- The web-interface gui sometimes fails to load. Sometimes connecting to the IP address works, when connecting to the router.asus.com address (which the router is supposed to automatically link to itself) fails 99% of the time. Power cycling fixes the ability to see the GUI from the IP address (until it fails again). Router.Asus.com hasn't worked since day 2 of owning the router. (I've had it installed for 12 days).
- Secondary router randomly loses internet access. Considering this secondary router is hooked into an ethernet port on this router, it shouldn't ever lose access. The two are also properly set up for this functionality, so both this and the GUI loss don't make sense....)
- The Quick Setup Wizard opens every time you connect to the router's IP, despite it only supposed to do that on first startup. This is annoying, and forces you to click a button to skip it to get to main screen. I used Redirector addon in firefox to just point the wizard setup to the main screen because I got sick of it. (Factory reset fixed this)
- Firmware needs a lot of work.
- Guest wifi network is easily set up and works, but the GUI doesn't reflect that it was successfully set up.
- After a factory reset, the QuickWizard stopped showing up after first completion. So thats nice. But had to power cycle the router by unplugging from wall outlet in order for it to recognize the Cable WAN after the reset (which was never disconnected).
- Had the DHCP server on the router fail multiple times, with the only fix to power cycle the router. Already-connected devices that had an established IP could still reach the internet, but no new devices were allowed to connect.
- The router has internet access, all devices on network have internet access, but the DDNS setup page refuses to establish a connection, claiming 'Unable to connect to the internet'. After contacting support, they basically told me to connect the laptop to the modem and check for internet, then connect the router to the modem and check again. Support didnt even acknowledge the fact that I wrote into the email that THIS IS THE MODEM AND ROUTER. I had even included a screenshot where the router gui says its both connected and not connected to the internet at the same time.
- Support was happy enough to help, but they were unable to help with any of my issues in a timely manner. When I did finally get an email response (since the phone support needed to escalate it sine they said my settings were ok and it should just work), the Asus 'engineer' only acknowledged 1 of my several questions (see his response in the above bullet point). After reading the chain that was on their email to me, it appears that none of the info I was asked to provide was ever sent around internally to actually get me the help I needed.
- Firmware is locked. You can only receive automatic updates via your ISP.
- I posed support a simple question about firmware: The device ID tag called out FWv1.0.1.5, but the GUI was listing it as having FWv1.0.1.3 installed. I suspect many of the issues I was encountering was due to old firmware. Unfortunately, when I asked about that directly (in the same email chain I had asked for the DDNS support), I was just told it would be passed along to the 'engineer'. 2 days had gone by without an answer, and the reply I did finally receive was a 4 step procedure to troubleshoot that doesn't even apply to this device.
- This device has a Intel Puma6 architecture, which has known latency issues among other issues. When playing games, I saw my ping jump from 80ms for a few seconds up to 250ms for a bit, then back down to 80ms. This occurred very frequently across multiple matches, leading me to believe that the Puma6 latency issue is still unresolved. (For reference, on my old setup I averaged 80-130ms ping depending on the host)
For the price point, this router has had a ton of issues, none of which support was able to successfully help me with. Due to the multiple issues that are occuring randomly daily, I have decided to return the product.
