Update after using for a bit: The leg extension could be a couple inches high off the ground. To use this thing I end up having to not bring my legs all the way down as my feet will get caught up between the floor and the foot pads. The cheezy plastic caps for the foot pads could be smaller too as they press into my ankle when using the leg extension and leg curls. Overall though still a worthwhile product. I read a bunch of the one start reviews and they sound like a bunch of people that do not know how to follow instructions on the assembly. I would not pay much heed to them.
A couple of dings though; minor ones but dings nonetheless. ONE is that adjusting the height of the preacher curl pad requires completely unscrewing and removing a knob bolt. I don't know why a lock pin wouldn't have been better for that. TWO is that I wish the seat could be adjusted forward and backward just a bit. But again, those are very minor dings.
Assembly wasn't bad at all since I followed the instructions carefully. However, the weird-looking little 'tool' provided for assembly is all but worthless! Unfortunately, the only alternative tools I had, and had to use, were a pair of standard pliers and a pair of channel lock pliers. Still from unboxing to completion took a bit less than two hours working entirely alone. If I'd had a socket set, I probably could have cut that time by a third. There were neither any missing parts or pieces nor any extras. None of the parts were scratched, bent or dented and everything was well-packed.
Overall, I'd recommend this bench. It's decently priced, of good quality, not hard to assemble and doesn't take up as much space as I thought it might. Plus, it looks very nice. If for any reason, as I use it, I come up with a reason to deduct any stars, I'll update this review. But for now, I don't hesitate to give it all 5.
Price wise, if you just lift for general fitness, this is it... For the price. Perfect balance of cost to quality and usability. Having said that, let's get into why this is a slightly mislabeled unit and the minor flaws.
1. The only reason this has the word "Olympic" in it, is because it has a 2" adaptor. It will hold a 7' bar as well (barely.) If you try to lift "Olympically" have 911 pre-dialed. You'll crush this thing like a soda can. It has a 350# weight limit. That's total weight. So if you weigh 260# like me, you're only allotted 90#. Having said that, I have 120# loaded (lightest I'll warm up at,) and it's solid enough that I'd feel comfortable loading another 30#.
2. I'm also only 5'8" tall and the leg pads fit me perfectly length wise and although the leg extension has ONE 2" adjustment hole, the hamstring curl has none. So if you have longer legs than a hobbit style 5'8" tall dude, you're S.O.L. Use it if you want, but you're working your legs improperly. The leg machine is rated for 50#, not bad for your hammys, but can be a little low for quads. FYI pro bodybuilders can maintain beautifully with 40# on hammy curls. Extension and flexion is different than deadlifts and jerks, etc. Don't lift with your ego!
3. This has nothing to do with the labeling, but the bench is really thin. For most average people it won't be a big deal, but for you wide bodies, like me, it'll pop in between your shoulder blades, throw your technique off and mess you up quick (it hurts.) There are work arounds for it (like a board, or even a foam floor mat,) but be warned. Along the same note, for bigger folks, the bench in full seated position will put your knees way out over the end of the bench seat for leg extensions, which is a good way to cause lots of unnecessary stress on the knees.
5. Just to throw this in, it's not "hard" to assemble, just tedious. There are a few things that are labeled funky as well, like the swivel arm lock for the back bench rest position. It just shows a picture of it and not where it goes exactly. If you've never put a bench together it might throw you a little. but you'll get there.
Having said all this I'd like to reiterate, this is a great bench for the price and if you're handy/resourceful, you can upgrade/modify your way out of all of these short comings. If you can weld, this bench can hold whatever plates you wanna pile on with ease. Fairly easily actually. That's my plan, 6 triangles welded in the proper corners and this thing will take my 260# body weight and a 280# bar no problem. I even ripped a bench off my old rusted brand name bench and replaced this one to alleviate the thin bench issue. If you're just looking to get into shape, you won't regret this machine.
