The Experts Agree
“The demo pair (ELAC B5) produced jaw-dropping sound—and not just "for the money." It was naturally weighted with a smooth yet detailed top end, uncolored mids, surprisingly solid and extended lows, and superb imaging.” - Thomas J Norton, Stereophile, The Show Newport, 2015
The Show Newport 2015 coverage
Best Sound (for the money): The Andrew-Jones-designed ELAC Debut B5 ($229 per pair—that’s not a misprint) may not only be the greatest bargain at the Newport show, but may turn out to be the greatest bargain in the history of audio. This tiny econo-box was spectacularly, stunningly, amazingly great for the price. I can’t wait to hear the higher-end speakers Jones is developing for ELAC. – Robert Harley, The Absolute Sound, April 2015.

So, where to begin with these that hasn't already been said. Mostly what's been said is that 'These are the best speakers in their price range'...but until I got them, it was hard to understand exactly 'what' price range they were quantified as being part of. Are they 'Good under $300?', are they 'Good under $500?' what about 'Good under $1,000, or $1,500 or $2,000'. You probably see where I'm going with this and if you were like me, once you found out about the new line from Andrew Jones @ ELAC, you couldn't stop reading and watching all the YouTube videos of peoples jaw's dropping when they found out the B5 & B6 would be under $300/pr. I've been a huge fan of what Andrew Jones has done for the budget minded audio world over the past couple of years, and until these ELAC B6's, I'd not yet turned that appreciation to an actual purchase. I was running a Klipsch Reference 7.2 system before I moved up to Bowers & Wilkins. To preface my system (as I feel it gives a better real-world idea of what I currently have and what/why I decided on what I did) consists of a Yamaha 2030 AVR, 10ga speaker wire terminated w/ bananas (mostly from Monoprice), 2x Jamo 800 subs (I also have a review for those & my opinion still holds true, 5-Star all the way for these subs), and for video I have an Epson 5020 projector w/ a 92" +1 gain Elite Screen. My room is roughly 15x12 w/ 9' double-slant ceiling, totaling 1,620 cubic feet of space, or 180 square feet. It's your typical over-garage bonus room.
I upgraded from the Klipsch Reference (Tower L/R, center & bi-pole surrounds), to the Bowers & Wilkins 600 series 7-speaker system. My front L/R are B&W 685's, my surrounds are B&W 686's and my back-surrounds are B&W DS3 running in mono-pole. My center was a mix-match Martin Logan C2, which is MIND-BLOWING, and will remain as my center channel. I had recently demo'd a pair of Martin Logan LX16 (on Amazon for $239/ea) against the B&W 685, but they fell short, ribbon tweeter and all. And that folded motion tweeter is EXACTLY why I bought the ML C2 center and decided to give the LX16's a shot. Yes, they ARE exactly the same as the Motion 15's, they just have a flat-top VS a slight slant on the Motion 15's. I called ML to verify this, as you can...nothing changed but the cabinet...and price. So, again, the ML LX16's sound incredible, but just don't have any real bottom end, which I kind of expected going in, and the ribbon, although absolutely incredible, wasn't enough to warrant their decently low price...so they've been boxed back up to be returned. The B&W 686's may have been a better A/B comparison, but I was looking at my front L/R's to upgrade, and they just fell short.
So, to the ELAC. What else can I really say or add that hasn't been said, written, YouTube'd...other than this; Everything said is 100% accurate. Other than my Bowers & Wilkins 685's, which are heralded in their own right as some of the best bookshelf speakers you can buy, I've never purchased anything and felt 100% in-line with every other review I've read/watched. And this is where the real A/B of the ELAC vs B&W 685's came into play. The retail on the 685's is roughly $700. Do they sound good for $700...ABSOLUTELY. They sound incredible. They have amazing highs, great mids and 'decent' bass. You aren't going to get the same bottom end from the 685's as you do the ELAC B6's, period. I've tried all combinations of crossovers with my Jamo's, and while running them in a strictly 2.0 set-up, the B6's leave the 685's in the dust. It's insane. My wife, who like most audiophiles wives, walked into the media room today and sat down and I play the first song, and her jaw hit the floor. And she could NOT care less about anything related to my home-theater addiction/hobby. So to me, that was a clincher, and sometimes what we need to hear. I think a lot of times, upgradeitis sets in that if we just spend that extra 50% next time, or upgrade this, it will be better. And overall, once you hit that sweet-spot, the ever-famous point of diminishing returns sets in. And you really have to have other things in order FIRST before dumping more & more money at gear. I have treated my room numerous times, and it's evolving as my equipment changes. I have Auralex panels placed to take out most of the room ring, first-reflections, etc..., heavy drapes on the single window and the small hallway has matching drapes to look like theater curtains. It looks nice, is functional and makes an audible difference. And that is again why, I've decided to move away from Bowers & Wilkins and convert to ELAC. Andrew Jones has somehow managed to do what he's achieved with TAD, Pioneer and now ELAC, by providing insanely high-end audiophile level equipment, but this time, it's actually affordable to most normal working people who have a stereo/home-theater hobby.
Specifically what I like about the B6's over the 685's is their amazing sound for 2.5x LESS than the 685's. Yes, just like everyone else has said, it is true. And it's unfortunate but great at the same time that I started with the 685's, because now I'm chasing the best deals to BEAT my more expensive gear. It's great to find a gem like this new ELAC line at ridiculously low prices because I can sell my Bowers system and HAVE MONEY LEFT OVER...how many times does that work out?? I usually have to put money WITH what I made selling something to buy my next item, like most people. But I can sell my 685's and buy another set of B6's and have a little money left over...that is the best win I've ever had in my home theater build, and I'm about 16 years into this hobby now. Once I sell my 686's, I'll have almost made my money back from my initial B&W purchase and I'll have replaced 4 speakers. So if you are remotely thinking about spending anywhere from $300-$1,000 on speakers, bookshelves/towers whatever, LISTEN TO THESE FIRST. I can't stress it enough that I simply can not believe how great these sound, and how much they embarrass the 685's. Again, if the 685's were $300, it would be a closer match up. But there is NO reason to justify the extra $420 for the B&W's, period. There just IS NOT $420 of sound there, in fact, it should be reversed. The B6's could easily sell for $500 or $1,000. I really do think I'm sold on ELAC's from here on out, and would love to hear the new UniFi bookshelf's coming out, but again, I'm not sure their price will yield that much difference. If it does, I may use these B6's as surrounds and place the UniFi's as my FL/FR's. I'm sure they will even further leave the 685's in the dust, and probably the CM's for that matter.
So, as you can probably gather, I can't stop praising these B6's. They are absolutely the best speakers I've heard, in my room, ever. Yes, I'm sure other speakers sound better, but they will have to cost $1,000+, maybe even $3,000+, and I'm not going to spend that. This is a hobby that I love, but I can live within limits, and I'm very happy with what these B6's offer, and their price is as good as their sound. This is not only my new recommendation for those new to the hobby to purchase, but also those who, like me, may have spent 2-5x as much on their current system, and can easily re-coop some of that money and not have LESS gear, but a speaker-for-speaker swap and money in their pocket.
Anyway, that's all I've got. I may update this 'if' I get the UniFi's or the F6's (which I really don't seem to see a need for at this time). Jump off the fence if you've been considering the 685's, CM's or Martin Logan Motion 15's, Motion 35XT's and even the Motion 40 towers. I would easily put these against them and think 'most' people would be very hard pressed to justify the extra $400- $1,800 on those speakers. The gains simply ARE NOT THERE.
John Coltrane's Blue Train, the upright bass sounds to be coming from 5-6 feet to the right of the right speaker. Just emanates out of thin air and its distinctive. The sound of the players fingers on the strings. The scrape, the pluck, the resonance. The percussion, from just right of center between the speakers, The brass stretches from left of center to several feet to the left of left channel speaker. Very nice. I find myself looking towards where I hear the sound coming from.
Second example; Calexico Spiritoso; great live album. If you don't have it, get it. The band mixes it up with two different orchestras in two different cities in Europe. I can hear the room change. I don't know which song is which orchestra off the top of my head but the arrangement of the ensemble changes. The space changes and with the Elacs I can hear it. This album brought another thought to mind while I was listening. A lot of reviews here and elsewhere report the need for a subwoofer. I'm going to have to disagree. I can feel the large drums pound and the large strings vibrate in the cushion of the seat I'm in. I can feel them move the air. From 6.5-ish feet away. The speakers are 18 inches from the wall behind them and on 24 inch stands as recommended by the designer and it works. I'm getting what I feel is an appropriate amount of lower frequencies. The room I'm listening in is certainly not small and it's filled with gorgeous sound.
I paired these with Emotiva's Basx a300 for a high power/low cost option and the combo works, well.
Vinyl, compact disc it all sounds great coming from the elacs. Even poor recordings are rendered more kindly than they probably deserve.
UPDATE***
I left update on the basx amplifier and I should probably mention it here as well. I'm hearing a slight change in tone, I guess it's tone. There's a slight warmth that has settled in in the last 25 or so hours. A mellowing, a sweetness. I'm not sure how to describe it. Rough edges that were there days ago are now gone, especially in the treble. I didn't feel there was any roughness to the sound prior but things are a little kinder now. Mr. Davis' trumpet on the track "blue in green" doesn't pop out it floats. I don't know the terms. These speakers have become a nicer listen. Still fairly accurate as far as I can tell. The separation is still the same and the imaging is still kind of mind blowing to me and the low end is still very nicely represented without being flabby or bloated. If you're on a budget or just kind of casually walking up Mt. Hifi or just startin to really give a crap about the quality of the sound you hear, I don't see how it's hard to go wrong with the Elac B6 speakers. They're very simple black boxes that produce wonderful sound. This was an upgrade from klipsch r15pm that frankly I outgrew pretty quickly.
Top reviews from other countries
I needed some additional wall mounted speakers in my basement and didn't want to spend a ton of $$. After doing my research I came across the Elac B6's highly reviewed and recommended across the board. Tuned by Andrew Jones of pioneer!
I was glad to find these on sale sold directly by Amazon, shipping was pretty fast. These are hands down one of the best sounding speakers you can get at this price (unless you can find a set of Kef Q100's or 300's at this price then I'd choose those instead) they have been tuned just right with crisp highs, clear mids and clean bass! Having auditioned them for a while now I can understand and appreciate what all the fuss is about.
As always I recommend giving them time to open up/break in by playing them regularly and you'll get to appreciate how full they sound. The speakers are fairly well built and compact, I was able to wall mount them with a set of B77 wall mounts also from Amazon (check them out too).
Important to note is that they are rated at 6ohms so please ensure you have an adequately capable amplifier that can power them sufficiently.
Overall solid product at a steal! Try 'em out, you won't regret it!
