On to the specifics of this mouse, if you are a fan of the G500, like I am, this is a great upgrade to your old faithful. The sides of the mouse offer a slightly rough rubberized texture for improved grip/tactile response in game. Just above the thumb rest you will find 3 programmable buttons for front/back +1 navigation. These can of course be customized via software to your liking. On the top left, next to your index finger (mouse 1 button) are two buttons to control the laser dpi setting on the fly. This comes pre-configured with three settings but can be customized and can support up to 5 pre-set dpi settings. This is GREAT for games that offer a variety of modes, like Battlefield 4 for example. I use one, mid range setting for regular FPS, a higher setting for land vehicles to increase the speed that I can swing my gun turrets, Each setting is completely independent and can be set to the individual user's liking. As far as sensitivity is concerned, you can go as low as 200 dpi and as high as 8200 dpi.
The scroll wheel has a nice feel and can be toggled via physical switch (just behind the scroll wheel) to free spin or click spin. My preference is click, the resistance, in my opinion, is perfect and can be flicked for a fast scroll when needed. Also customizable on the G500s (like the G500 before it) are the weights that can be added to the removable tray on the underside. The mouse can be operated with no weight or up to six weights of 1.7g or 4.5g each (mixed/matched as desired by the user). Personally, I prefer a heavier mouse, but to each their own. Via the Logitech software, you can also customize the report or polling rate between 125 and 1000 times per second.
If you have used the G500 and like the design and may need a new mouse, this is a no brainer. The full retail is a little expensive, but not unreasonable. If this is on sale, I would grab it immediately without hesitation. As an adult male with average, maybe slightly large hands that prefers a palm grip (not claw), this design is one that I keep going back to and have no regrets with. I hope this helps in making your decision if this is the right mouse for you or someone that you know!
The mouse is perfect for palm grips nice and big. The scroll wheel as well as the left and right clicks are soft. I find it hard to distinguish between clicks on the scroll sometimes as it is very smooth, but that's not an issue for me. I have also found that the left and right click take very little pressure to activate and can be activated fairly far back on the mouse. That has it's upsides and downsides. I have accidentally fired off a burst in BF4 giving away my position, but it also makes for very easy reaction times.
The dpi speeds are completely customizable, you can select 1 dpi setting and use the buttons for something else, or you can set your DPI to 100 to the max for 5 different presets. Which is great for gaming, I turn my DPI up in tanks in BF4 for a faster turret speed and drop it right back down when I'm on foot. That heli that's doing a run on you, switch it up even higher so you can get you turret turned 180 degrees and take him out. It's a very useful feature and I know other mice offer it but in my experience this has been the most comfortable easy to use buttons. I find my self actually switching DPI in game where I didn't before.
I'd recommend this to my friends and have, it may take a little getting use to, but I think you'll love it. Especially if you like a heavier larger mouse for gaming.
I purchased this mouse to replace my aging G400, which had been in use for nearly 4 years 8+ hours a day. I used it more heavily than the average user, so I was actually surprised it lasted that long. The mouse button was actually what was beginning to go - it still worked, but occasionally the button would not register when I held it down (Meaning items were released when I try to click and drag, or games requiring precise release of the mouse button wound up firing shots early).
I wanted to stick with the same basic shape of the G400 that I had become so accustomed too, as it was very comfortable to me, so I immediately weighed my options: The G400s, G500s, G402, G502, G602 and G700s. I didn't want a wireless mouse so the 6xx and 7xx series were out, and I really wanted the hyper-scrolling wheel - something I sorely missed from my laptop (which has a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse) - so the 4xx series went out too, leaving me with the G500s and the G502.
Here's where the decision got tricky. The G502 is a brand new mouse, while the G500s has been out for about 9 months. While I've heard there have been improvements to the scroll wheel on the G502 (a bad sign for the G500s if Logitech explicitly had to tell you the wheel was improved), I had also heard there were some manufacturing defects from the G502 - specifically it was not holding up after a few weeks for some users. I read a lot of complaints about the rubber feet and the tracking sensor in particular, so knowing it was a new sensor for them, I decided to stay away from it and go with the 500s instead.
Well, as much as I tried to avoid a mouse with problems, the first mouse that arrived at my door was defective. The DPI + button only worked half the time, and the scroll wheel was completely off balance. When I used the scroll wheel with hyperfast scrolling active (no clicks), no matter how gently and straight I removed my finger from the scroll wheel, it would rotate on its own, sometimes up to a full revolution. Upon close inspection, I saw that there was a bulge on one part of the scroll wheel, which was causing it to rotate. Since this was the primary feature I wanted from this new mouse and it was broken, I had no choice but to request a replacement. Luckily, Amazon is great when it comes to replacements! They shipped a new mouse out to me with next-day shipping and told me I just had to return the defective mouse within 30 days, meaning I didn't have to box the defective one up and go back to a travel mouse while I waited for them to receive the defect. I just received the new mouse earlier today and tested it out to see if it had the same problems, which thankfully it didn't! The scroll wheel still doesn't seem perfectly symmetrical if you watch it while it scrolls, but this one seems to have a less-pronounced bump, and slightly more friction in the wheel (not significant, just enough to keep it from moving). Hopefully it stands up over time, but if not I'll be updating this review.
With the new mouse and the defective one, I've had some time to test the model out. In all, if you liked the G400, the G500s will feel pretty much the same. The G400 is pretty much the only gaming mouse I ever liked, so this is going to be pretty much a comparison: The one gripe I had with the G400 was that the forward and back buttons were far too easy to press when I went to grab the mouse. This lead to much frustration when I accidentally hit the back button as soon as I finished typing out long emails or forum posts in particular, causing me to lose everything I had just typed! For the G500, back button is slightly more rigid and has more pronounced edges, making it harder for your thumb to slide across the button when you go to grab the mouse and accidentally press it. Addiitonally, the G500s without any weights in the weight cartridge is either lighter or has a lower friction than the G400, meaning it's harder to accidentally press those buttons without moving the whole mouse first. Hopefully this will mean less frustration every few weeks when this used to happen to me!
The finish on the mouse seems very nice. The thumb grip has a rough, almost sandpaper-like feel to it, which at first I thought was weird, but after an hour I switched back to the G400 for a second and immediately noticed how much less grip I had than the 500s, so a positive mark for the new texture. The finish also seems to be sweatproof (at least for now), so that should be good as well for those long gaming sessions.
The buttons are ok. I already mentioned the side buttons which are an improvement, but the DPI buttons are now a bit out of reach. I liked where they were in the G400, but it's not a deal-breaker, and the buttons appear to be of higher quality. The positioning of the scroll wheel mode-switching button (whatever it's actually called, I don't know) is perfect, and it's not too easy or difficult to press to change modes. The scroll wheel itself is about average, the hyper-fast scrolling will easily bring you all the way up or down even the longest of webpages with just one flick of the wheel (two if you are navigating a page more than a few thousand manual scrolls long, but still an obvious improvement over regular scrolling). The middle click can be a little tricky, since you have side scrolling as well, but as long as you have your finger properly positioned you should be fine.
The tracking is excellent. With an 8200DPI sensor, I can easily go the length of 3 monitors without picking up my mouse. In fact it's so good I don't even need pointer acceleration enabled, so I have shut that off. I also recommend changing the polling rate to 1000 per second for improved accuracy, which can be done through the LGS software (a free download on Logitech's site). My own settings are for a 2400dpi set as default for general browsing, with four additional DPI settings 800, 1600, 3600, and 4800. I stick with 2400 for general browsing and most games, 3600 or 4800 for HD games that require quick mouse movements and less accuracy or have naturally slow mouse movement that I don't like, and 1600 or 800 for lower-dpi applications and games. The ability to define up to 5 DPI is excellent, as you can quickly fine tune your mouse to be perfect for any situation without worrying about digging through the control panel of some other layer of software!
All things considered, I think I like my purchase. Yes, it would have been nicer to get the newer G502 with the improved sensor and sharper styling, but for $20 extra and with potential longevity issues, I wasn't going to chance it. As long as you get a mode of the G500s that isn't defective, it should be a good, comfortable mouse with years and years of use ahead of it. In case it's not though, I'll update this review with any future problems.
