I put the netgear in the garage, in preparation for re-installing the barn router. My office is upstairs on the opposite end of the house, through a few of those solid wood walls, and also the metal HVAC ducts. I actually get a good, high-speed signal 70' away, full-strength. I can even setup my wifi cameras in my office and they connect to the R7500 just fine at this distance. The beamforming works beautifully.
I am getting just as good a signal as the mesh system (with 1 router vs 5 mesh pucks) that has a puck in the room next to me. I am kind of blown away at how far this thing is piping the signal in a house that really blocks signals on almost every wifi device. The cameras it is detecting at this distance have terrible antennas. The signal power for those is all coming from the router.
The flexibility of configuration is also nice. The R7500 can act as a bridge or AP as well as a router (not that most people will ever use that but - if you try to pipe wifi to a barn it's one way to accomplish it - I'm debating getting another one now). The configuration menu is split in 2 systems - 1 designed for relative ease of use, and an advanced page for accessing power configurations. It's fairly nicely done (always hard to combine simple configuration with power-user menus). It's extremely easy to assign higher-priority to specific devices.
I'm impressed. I had it too close to my main router before and the signal interference between them didn't let it shine. Once I put it a little further away, and possibly with the firmware update, it's power is really evident now.
My home network is MAD Gucci now. It crazy fast, bubb. With all the additional features and security, I don't have to worry about RANDIES trying to own my stuff. When playing overwatch, the noobs get REKT, bruh. I'm streaming music and vids like a BOUSE. Didn't I mention how Gucci everything is?
From adult terms:
Our home network is extremely solid and reliable now. Been using this for about a week and I have had no complaints from anyone in the family regarding slow connections, dropped signals, and such. I am very pleased with this router. The setup was very easy. The wifi signal strength is tremendous all over the house and into the backyard. I have over 20 devices connected to this with zero issue. I have had no problems using the Genie software on android or windows desktop. I am using this with AT&T Gigapower 1Gbit fiber. I turned off the WiFi on the AT&T provided modem/router, enabled bridge mode, and use the Netgear Nighthawk X4 as my primary router instead.
In the past two years I have gone through at least two cheaper (cost) AC dual band routers (both were from popular name brands) and both couldn't even begin to match the overall power and function of the nighthawk X4 while they worked. Both slowly died, which is a nightmare when you are trying to figure out what's wrong with your internet. My only hope is that this router lasts for at least 1-2 years.
Something to note - as someone else mentioned, The Nighthawk X4 is a REALLY big router. Keep that in mind if you have limited real estate for your setup.
I'm glad I waited for the security bugs to get worked out since the router is connected to a Windows Server and a datbase server. While I appreciate being the first one to get one, this would have been playing with fire on this product line,
I had never seen one in the store and I was surprised at how large it was. It certainly had a larger footprint than the previous upright models had. Our first reaction when taking it out of the box was "was this made by Netgear or from someone appointed by a Sith Lord" since the shape, color and design of it certainly appeared as if it came from the Deathstar that it even made the BB8 droid in the house nervous to be next to it. Be prepared to clear some space for this one.
It can appear to be overkill for what it does but if your like ourhold and video streaming is becomming more important in your house, you need a router tha can handle the demands of HDTV on more than one device in the house. Thankfully, this router manages it very well.
Unlike some of the higher end routers that Netgear carries, this router is generous with the USB 3.0 and an external SATA port for pluging printers and storage devices to keep the media organized. As a Tivo houshold, I was surprised that this router is compatible with our esisting series 3 boxes and can easily transfer videos from device to the external storage using the Tivo bridge we have. I would only hope in the future that Netgear can make external storage devices encrypted just in case they end up in the wrong hands since this can be used for household security purposes.
I though the the range would be extended better for upstairs use. We have a Netgear range extender that we use to make the signal go further but its location has been in the way of using the outlet for other devices.
I wasn't able to measure the bandwidth for QOS when connected to the Netgear DSL modem through our Centurylink service. While we don't have the greatest bandwidth where we live, we hope it can get better over time but using the best network equipment we can get can help the situation.
Thanks to the Genie software in the router, this device will easily integrate into the Netgear DSL modem and it's own extenders without any additional setup.
Since this router is a computer, I'm hoping that this device can learn how bandwidth is used within devices to help solve some of the holding patterns some devices had in the past.
