Yes they are tucked in the back, all you have to do is lower the handle and pull the straps out, its ready to go on your back. This is a nice backpack and a very reasonable price.

Sorry, this bag fell apart at first use, the handle fell off and from there it was downhill.
I could not return it because I sent it to France as a gift.

Yes you can. I used it when I was in college and helped a lot!

My 9yr/o used hers for school. The only hiccup is the straps. When she has the bag in rolling mode, they scrap the ground something awful. There&#39;s no way to adjust them so that they wont. She ties them up, but because of the material they&#39;re made from,  the straps come undone a lot and still end up scrapping the ground, ruining them. Because of this, she&#39;s hesitant about wanting another this upcoming school year. But yes, there are straps for the bag to be carried on a child&#39;s back as well. And the bag is plenty large enough. Holds a lot.
