I've had this mouse for the one and a half years, and it hasn't let me down. I only give 5 star rating for quality items, and this is a must have. I have a laptop, and the USB is always connected to it. It doesn't stick out too much, but I always make sure that when I put it in my backpack, the weight of my laptop is not on the USB (since I place it sideways in my bag).
I've never had the previous version of this mouse, so i cannot comment on the many reviews that say this mouse isn't as good as the last. However, I can say that this mouse will definitely last. I have dropped it a few times by accident (from maybe about 3 feet), and it is still working and does not have any dings or dents. It feels great in my hand, and after using this mouse, I cannot use any other mouse (especially if it isn't an ergonomic mouse). The back and front buttons are placed in an ideal position, making it easy and fast to go back/forward on web pages.
BATTERY
The battery life is pretty good (considering I use it everyday for at least 9 hours a day). I actually like that it isn't a mouse with a rechargeable battery, otherwise it would be a hassle to keep on recharging the battery. All I have to do is get an AA battery (or two) and it's ready to go. Once the battery gets low, the light on the mouse turns from green (to indicate it is on) to red, and a sign comes on my laptop saying the battery is low (I'm guessing this only happens if the software is installed).
GETTING USED TO IT
At first I was a little confused when using this mouse. When I click the scroll wheel, it changes the setting of the scroll wheel. This means you can change to feel the "clicks" when you scroll, or make it a smooth scroll. I got used to it within the first week, and I actually like this feature. When I'm trying to get near the bottom of the page or document, I use the smooth scroll. I do a lot of 2D and 3D modelling (e.g. AutoCAD and SolidWorks), and the "click" scroll comes in handy for this. It allows me to have precise control when zooming in and out, since I can feel the click.
Many mice (is that correct?) activates the middle mouse button when you click the scroll wheel, but this mouse has a separate button for that. You eventually get used to it, and I actually like it. It has the right amount of "click" so you know it's working.
SOFTWARE
You can install the Logitech software to change the setting for the mouse. I didn't like the "floaty" feel it originally had when scrolling web pages, so I was able to turn that off. Also, you can program the middle button to do different tasks.
RECOMMEND?
I would definitely recommend this mouse. I've never used a touch mouse, so I cannot compare between those, but this mouse is one of the best mice I have ever used. It definitely lasts, and it works on almost all surfaces very well. It's small enough to bring with your laptop, and comes with it's own case and a place within the mouse to keep the USB. It isn't like many laptop mice that are too small, this is just the right size.
The first thing that I noticed about the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX was that it feels extremely high quality. It feels great under my hand even though it's one of the smaller Logitech mice that I've owned, and it has a very nice weight to it once the batteries are installed. The newer versions have a glossy top with the same soft-touch rubbery grips on the sides. I prefer the older matte versions, but it's a small difference; the mouse performs and feels the same otherwise. The bottom has four relatively large feet for smooth gliding, and a big, easy-to-flip switch to turn the mouse off. The battery compartment opens up to reveal slots for two AA batteries, and a small slot in the center to store the Unifying Receiver.
I use low self-discharge batteries, and they seem to last one to two months with daily office use in the Anywhere Mouse MX. I highly recommend buying a set of AA low self discharge batteries like Amazon's AmazonBasics precharged NiMH rechargables or Sanyo Eneloops.
Pros:
+ This sounds silly for a computer mouse, but the Anywhere Mouse MX feels very high end and high quality.
+ The Unifying Receiver means you can mix and match with other Logitech devices that support it.
+ Takes AA batteries. Buy a set of low self discharge batteries and you're set.
+ Scroll wheel switches between stepped and free-spinning mode when you press down on the wheel.
+ Really nice protective case.
+ The Darkfield laser tracking works great on all sorts of surfaces. It's perfect to use with laptops or HTPCs where you might need to use the mouse on a variety of surfaces.
Cons:
- Clicking the mouse wheel toggles it between stepped and free-spinning mode (or Hyper-fast). Since this is a mechanical feature built into the mouse, you can't have the scroll wheel handle middle click. The button below the wheel is the middle click button. I have another Logitech mouse where this is reversed; it has a dedicated button to switch scrolling modes, while the wheel itself handles middle clicking.
- Maybe it's my Wifi interfering, but I've always had problems with poor reception with Unifying Receivers. I have to plug the receiver into a front USB port on my case to get smooth tracking.
Overall, this is a really, really nice mouse. None of the "cons" that I listed are really that bad because I can get used to the scroll wheel setup, and I worked around the reception issues by using an extension cable.

Works virtually on all kinds of surface, as promised/ claimed... even on glass...
I love the pouch it comes with... helps you carry the mouse with you without giving it scratches...
