Best in Class Service & Support
Affordable monitors don’t have to be cheap monitors. We strive to bring to market high-quality, value-packed products. And we’re so confident in our 34-inch monitors that we include a zero-tolerance dead pixel policy — the best in the market. This is not a halo product, not the best of the very best. But then, it is not competing in that class. Viotek is aiming to provide a solid ultrawide experience at an affordable price, and to that end they have succeeded admirably.
The display is sharp and well lit, although it could be a little brighter for HDR reasons, since it apparently supports HDR 10(?) and yet does not advertise anything related to HDR. I'm not educated enough on that particular feature so I will consider it a welcome bonus and leave it at that.
For contrast it has the usual benefits of a VA panel and colors look gorgeous, especially in a low light environment. Colors are lush and beautiful, not as color accurate as IPS so don't get this monitor if you are doing video editing, Photoshop, etc. as a professional.
For speed, it operates well up to 144hz, at medium overdrive settings I dont notice any issues. Beware of high, ghosting is bad and not worth any speed increases.
For design, it is simple and usable. Nothing fancy but then that means the compromise was made there so you could get a better display. Worth it.
The menu is clumsy but usable. Oh well.
Hardware needs: This is a 1440p ultrawide, you are pushing considerably more pixels than standard 1440p, a little bit less than midway between that and 4k. You will want a solid gpu if you want to game at high settings and above. Right now from AMD that means realistically a 5700xt, maybe 5700. Or a VII if you happen to have that already. Even then you are about on the edge there, and I say that as a happy owner of a 5700xt. RDNA2 I assume will handle this resolution like a champ, but that isn't out yet. For Nvidia 2070 Super as the minimum and up from there. 3080 should pound those frames if you can find one, I assume 3070 will as well if the rumored performance is accurate. For any gpu operating with less than 8gb of vram you may have issues gaming at higher settings, so don't pair this monitor with something less than upper mid-range as a long term solution.
Final thoughts: at base price this is a good experience, a solid compromise if you need to spend money elsewhere, like on gpu. This monitor is fantastic for gaming, and good enough for light productivity. Not recommended if your primary use is color sensitive work, recommended otherwise.
The stand that’s included isn’t good. No height adjustment and no rotation. If you get a VESA mount like I did, know the screw holes are recessed into the back of the monitor fairly deep (especially the bottom two). I ended up needing to buy more screws as the ones that came with my mount wouldn’t reach (it uses metric screws, M4-0.7, and I used 40mm length in my case). If you order a mount with the monitor, do yourself a favor and order the screws at the same time!
Finally, the screen itself. The picture quality is amazing! It’s mentioned before how you can’t adjust the brightness with HDR active, which is frustrating at first, but not a major deal. Once you have your brightness set where you want (I use around 65, with a contrast of 55), enable HDR on the monitor, then in Windows/software, and it looks great! Some games (Assassins Creed Odyssey) started out too bright with everything washed out, but if you lower the in-game brightness down to 20%, it looks significantly better! Others (Fuser) look amazing out of the box! After using this for a while, I can’t imagine going back to a normal wide screen for gaming! Ultra wide is much more immersive! Just make sure you have a graphics card capable of running the extra resolution! I had to turn down the graphical settings in several games to achieve a playable frame rate. One more minor niggle is if the frame rate drops too low during a dark scene (like sub-20), there tends to be a slight flicker every few seconds. Not enough for me to really get annoyed, but I could see how it can put someone off.
Having the extra screen real estate for video editing is not something I knew I needed until I got this monitor! The resolution of the iMac may be higher, but the extra space is a lot better for timeline adjustments. With multiple DisplayPort inputs, having the side-by-side feature is great as well for multiple computers. Coupled with a program like Synergy to use the same mouse and keyboard across a Mac and PC makes this feature seamless! It has a picture-in-picture option as well, but even at the largest setting, it’s still a bit too small to do much without zooming in. The only option I’d like to see with the side-by-side feature is to have the monitor report back a native resolution of 1720x1440 while this mode is active in order to not automatically cut every other vertical line. Otherwise, it’s an awesome feature to have!
All in all, I can’t recommend this monitor enough, especially for the price! I was shopping for a new monitor for months, and this is the only one that checked all my boxes within my price range (curved, ultra wide, HDR, 144Hz, and sub-$500). After using it, I couldn’t be happier!
